LUMA is a next-generation financial service that integrates AI
Luma is a concept banking app designed around the seamless integration of AI into everyday financial routines. As the financial industry rapidly embraces AI technologies, Luma addresses a growing challenge: building user trust through transparency. Rather than positioning AI as a cold, hidden force, Luma reframes it as a customizable, secure extension of the user. With clear communication and personalized control at its core, Luma helps users feel more confident, informed, and in command of their financial future.
Research
My initial research into the banking industry revealed a striking contrast: while 87% of banks are investing in generative AI for both internal operations and consumer-facing services (SAS Institute Inc., 2025), 74% of users express concerns about a lack of transparency in how that technology is used. AI in banking isn’t new — early versions were introduced in the 1980s for fraud detection using basic “if-then” logic. But today, AI capabilities have evolved dramatically. From dynamic financial forecasting to intelligent virtual assistants and real-time reporting, AI is reshaping what banking can be. Yet with this shift comes a responsibility: banks must evolve with clarity and intention, or risk losing user trust.
Branding
Luma’s branding was built with AI at its core. I began by analyzing the existing visual language surrounding artificial intelligence and financial services. The result is a brand that speaks to innovation without alienation. A modern aesthetic that communicates intelligence and trust. The vibrant green color palette reinforces this balance — symbolizing growth, vitality, and a subtle nod to money and financial wellbeing. To deepen the emotional resonance of the brand, I developed an advertising campaign titled “Luma. See what your AI sees.” This concept pairs Luma’s mission with three iconic artworks — each chosen for its layered history and openness to interpretation. Like these paintings, AI can often feel opaque or misunderstood. In this campaign, the artworks become metaphors for transformation: turning the unseen into something knowable, visible, and meaningful.
User Testing
Following the development of initial wireframes, I conducted A/B testing to compare two distinct approaches to interface design: Test A featured a transparent layout that clearly indicated when AI was active. Users could customize AI features, adjust tone and communication preferences, and explore how their data was being used. Test B mirrored traditional banking apps, offering minimal visibility into AI’s role. The results were decisive: 96% of users preferred Test A’s transparent and customizable design. User feedback also led to iterative improvements — making transparency-focused elements more prominent and refining onboarding flows to highlight user control. These insights confirmed that visibility, customization, and trust are not just features — they are essential competitive advantages in the future of AI-driven banking.
Next Steps
The next stage for Luma includes developing a comprehensive website and expanding user testing across additional app screens. As AI continues to evolve within the banking industry, I look forward to seeing how consumer expectations around transparency, trust, and personalization shape the future — and how Luma’s concept can be a part of that shift.
